Diving here is unlike any other underwater encounter in Florida. There are numerous wrecks to explore with a bountiful variety of fish. Endless underwater rock ledges hold gigantic lobster, monster grouper and schools of amberjack that circle you while underwater. There is a snapper population that is endless and a thriving variety of other sea life. Encounters with sea turtles are frequent and nurse sharks are caught snoozing under the ledges.
The summer months are the best diving time for the novice diver along the Treasure Coast, aptly name for all the sunkeon Spanish galleons. This time of year we are influenced by more high pressure systems that cause light winds and calm seas where underwater visibility is much better than in the winter months. Shallower depths can be obtained and less distance has to be traveled to get to the prime dive spots.
In the winter we get more of an easterly wind flow, known as " North Easterlies", which usually increase the sea state and churn up the bottom. This action tends to "dirty" the water somewhat reducing visibility. To get to cleaner water you need to travel further to deeper water for more favorable dive locations. These dives are usually conducted in the 60-90 ft range.
On the other hand, we also come under high pressure systems in the winter that calm the seas and make for great diving. At these times the waters are a little cooler where more fish tend to travel into the shallower waters. This is when spear fishing is at its best.
