With winds shifting and seasons transitioning, the fishing out of Port Canaveral has only begun to heat up. Grouper catches have increased dramatically as big spawning females begin to get hungry as the opening of grouper season nears on May 1st. Catching three or four fish a day is not uncommon as these spawning fish finish releasing their eggs and sperm and are looking for there next meal. Red snapper continue to be a mainstay and catching 40-50 fish becomes a daily ritual, showing no signs of being endangered. Amberjack begin to settle in on the deep wrecks nailing any live baits that drift through their area. Big schools of sandbar sharks haunt these wrecks, molesting fisherman and their prize gamefish as soon as the fish is hooked, leaving anglers with just heads on the end of their lines. Kingfish are also migrating through moving from spot to spot in large schools, and willing to take any live baitfish presented infront of them.
